Car Buyer Obligations
The buyer is required to check the expiration of the Safety Certificate before purchase. Registration transfers cannot be processed without a valid Safety Certificate.
If buying a unregistered vehicle, there is no legal requirement for sellers to provide a Safety Certificate/Roadworthy. It is, however, in the buyer’s best interest to request one before any purchase is made.
Car Seller Obligations
When selling your vehicle privately, the Safety Certificate/Roadworthy Certificate is valid for 2 months or 2,000km (whichever occurs first).
If you are a dealer, Safety Certificates/Roadworthy Certificates are valid for 3 months or 1,000km (whichever occurs first).
The seller is legally required to provide the buyer with a Safety Certificate and cover any repair costs that may be necessary.

Trucks and semi-trailer over 4,500gvm (4.5t) are required to obtain a Heavy Vehicle Certificate of Inspection (COI), by an accredited Examiner.

Trailers, caravans and horse floats over 750kg require a safety certificate if you’re selling.
Owners of trailers under that weight can undertake a self assessment at their nearest Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.
Vehicles, caravans or trailers that have permanent gas plumbing require a Gas Safety Certificate.
We can perform a Gas Safety Certificate inspection at the same time as a Vehicle Safety Certificate inspection.
