When do I need to have a safety certificate?

A Safety Certificate is required

  • In the case of vehicle registration transfers.
  • If you’re selling a car. A Safety Certificate must be displayed in the vehicle window if it is advertised for sale. Significant fines can apply if this is not done.

What's the difference between a Safety Certificate and Roadworthy Certificate?

In the case of  cars and light vehicles, there is none. In Queensland the name changed from Roadworthy Certificate to Safety Certificate in 1999.

They are still the same but for the purposes of the Queensland TMR we refer to them as Safety Certificates.

You may see that we refer to Roadworthy Certificates on this website and we do that for the purposes of customers that may not be aware of the change in the compliance naming scheme.

However, trucks over 4,500gvm (4.5t) still have their certifications referred to as Roadworthy Certificates.

How much will it cost?

Depending on which service you require the price will vary.

As we deliver services to large portions of SE Queensland and into far northern NSW regions our prices can fluctuate on service area.

Be assured that our prices are competitive and we will price guarantee on confirmed quotes from competitors.

How long will it take?

Depending on the service you require it could be 15 minutes or a few hours.

In general, a Safety Certificate check can take anywhere up to 45 minutes which includes the written report and exhaustive vehicle check.

Other services for compliance plates and pre-purchase inspections will vary on the vehicle type. Please check with us before making your booking.

Do I need a Safety Certificate for my trailer or caravan?

If a trailer, caravan, camper or poptop is over 750kg, dealers and sellers are required to obtain a Safety Certificate. Look on your registration papers for the weight.

If a trailer or caravan is less than 750kg, customers can simply visit a Queensland Transport and Motoring branch and complete a Self Assessment.

Do I need a Modification Plate inspection if I change my ute tray?

Yes, if your vehicle is over 4,500gvm a modification plate will be required.

Do I need a Modification Plate inspection if I change the colour of my vehicle?

A mod plate is not required if you change the colour of your car.

Changes to vehicles are regulated by the State of Queensland to make sure all vehicles are safe to drive.

According to the Department of Transportation, many modifications do not need approval if they are minor and still comply with the applicable legislation.

The following list from the Dept of Transportation outlines what modifications do not require approval.

  • Additional lighting
  • Air conditioners
  • Air shock absorbers
  • Alarm systems
  • Badge bars
  • Body markings and speed striping
  • Gearbox (pre 1976)
  • Mesh stone shields for wind screens and lamps
  • Mud spats and pebble guards
  • Optional manufacturer seating
  • Radio and stereo systems

If you’re still unsure, just call or contact us and we’ll let you know.

Can the inspection be carried out in any location?

A hard, flat surface is required for the inspection to be carried out, as a test drive of the vehicle will also be undertaken.

Do I need to be present for you to do the inspection?

No, as long as we have the keys and/or access to the vehicle or trailer, we can grab your details and payment over the phone.

Where Should I Display My Safety Certificate?

In the case of vehicles, the windscreen or windows are commonly the best places to display a safety certificate.

If a safety certificate is not visible from the first day of sale, owners may be fined $550.00

Placement of the certificate on trailers, caravans, horse floats, etc should be on the drawbar.
